Introducing Young Alien – Ryan Casserly

Ryan Casserly

Ryan Casserly

Mirage Systems is excited to introduce our first Young Alien!

This young shredder is adorable and talented.  At only age ten, Ryan is paving the way not only for young aspiring girls but for children with disabilities of all kinds around the world.  Born with a foot and leg disorder and told she may never walk, Ryan has proven the doctors wrong.  Taking the number 11 spot in the 2017 IBA Global Kids Challenge she became an internet sensation.  With her slogan ‘Abilities not Disabilities’ she’s already a firm believer in the importance of hard work to overcome life’s challenges.

Ryan also loves to have fun.  She flies in the tunnel as often as she can and can’t wait to be old enough to join the big kids outside!  There is no denying that many young tunnel flyers of today will dominate the skies in only a few years.  We look forward to watching Ryan’s exciting future.  Work hard and stay humble Ryan!

Mirage understands that we must be ambassadors for our sport
and we are committed to sharing and encouraging the future skydivers of tomorrow.

Mirage Systems Announces The Launch of Youth Athlete Mentoring Program

Young Aliens mentoring program to help inspire love
for the sport of skydiving among youth athletes.

For Immediate Release
March 29, 2018

DeLand, FL – Mirage Systems, a leading manufacturer of custom skydiving harness and container systems announced today the launch of their youth athlete mentoring program called “Young Aliens”. The program will identify and encourage up and comers in the relatively new sport of competitive tunnel flying.

“Our vision for Young Aliens is all about encouraging the next generation of the sport of Skydiving.” says Mirage Systems. “We understand the heart of skydivers; we build products every day that help people achieve their dream of human flight and we want the youth of tomorrow to know that as an industry, we want to help them transition from tunnel flying to really flying.”

Each sponsored athlete will have access to Mirage Systems sponsored athletes for mentorship and education. They will be featured through social media channels and through the worldwide reach of the Mirage network to promote the exciting sport of tunnel flying and skydiving to youth worldwide. In addition, Mirage will assist the athletes with their equipment once they are ready to make the transition from the tunnel to skydiving.

“Being so involved in the sport, we wanted to do something to reach youth in a constructive and purposeful way.” says Mirage Systems. “Many of our current sponsored athletes are at the highest levels of the sport and are inspiring many people in the fun jumper community. We know there are a lot of youth out there that are interested in the sport of skydiving but don’t know how to get involved. We want to be at the forefront of that effort.”

The Young Aliens Youth Mentoring Program will be selecting athletes to sponsor in the coming weeks and months. Mirage will be announcing their Young Aliens through social media and further media announcements. bridle past the red line

Ain’t Nothing Like a Trap

bridle past the red line

This is an excellent example of “What happens if I push the bridle past the red line?” Although we tested this very rigging error many times during the testing of the Trap System™, this is the first time we’ve seen it done in the field. The Trap System™ obviously still worked, but since the reserve bridle was pinched around the elastic, the elastic was torn off.

Although we aren’t happy to see mis-rigging, we are pleased that the Trap System™ performed as designed and tested. This container will come in for repair and should be happily back at the DZ jumping with its owner soon!

During development we tested the Trap System™ with the bridle pushed in too far, way too far, and ridiculously too far, yet it still worked as designed. During breakaways with those configurations it tore the elastic as expected, but never failed to capture the bridle and extract the reserve. Our testing also found that even when the reserve bridle was pushed through the elastic all the way to the bottom of the Trap panel the reserve pilot chute had no trouble withdrawing the bridle from the elastic in the event the ripcord is pulled.

We designed the elastic to be the weak link in the system to ensure that the bridle escapes, even when mis-rigged. With either a Trap System™ deployment or a normal reserve pilot chute deployment our tests showed that the elastic will break easily if needed, as is shown in these images.

The bottom of the elastic is left open for a reason. We tested a “pocket” made by sewing the bottom edge of the elastic down, but it just made it difficult to get the bridle under the elastic neatly, and riggers tended to try to overstuff the bridle into the elastic. The open elastic is easier to pack, easier to inspect, and allows the bridle to be inserted the full width of the elastic.

The Trap System™ has been in the field for several years, has numerous deployments, and is generally considered to be very rigger friendly. So simple, in fact, that almost everything you need to know about properly packing the Trap System™ is shown in a diagram inside the cover.

Riggers… be sure to read the instructions to fully understand the assembly and rigging of the Trap System™. At the very least, please follow the diagram inside the cover.

Mirage’s MARD

Mirage MARD

MIRAGE’S TRAP SYSTEM™ (RSL Mard):

The Trap System™ is unlike any other MARD system on the market. It’s a totally different approach. The Trap System is not attached to the reserve in any way, until you cutaway and the RSL is used.

It’s a true ‘non-interference’ system. Since there is no connection between the RSL and your reserve bridle, this means that there is nothing that must disconnect for a normal reserve deployment. If you pull the ripcord, or your AAD fires, the reserve pilot chute and bridle will deploy your reserve quickly and reliably, without hesitation and without interference from the Trap System.

Until you cutaway you, and your reserve, won’t know it’s there! Only when you cutaway, does the Trap System RSL engage to trap and withdraw the reserve bridle, turning your main canopy into a very large pilot chute.
