Container Sizing Guide

Sizing data is determined by canopy pack volume studies and pack tray area calculated by Mirage Systems. Results may vary. Make sure you read the feedback left by other customers. You can also submit your own feedback.

All canopy fits were determined using a 9 cell zero-p canopy for comparison for the main and a PD 7 cell f-111 for the reserve. Hybrid canopies or 7 cell canopies can usually fit one size larger than what the scale says. Crossbraced canopies usually pack 15% (or one size larger) than nine cell mains so plan accordingly.

Please keep in mind that your local climate may also play a large factor in the fit of your canopy in the container. If you are in a very dry, dusty climate such as on the west coast of the U.S. you may want to jump down one size on the canopy fit scale as canopies tend to pack up larger in dry dusty climates. Mirage Systems does not guarantee the fit of the canopies in your container due to varying climates as all pack studies were done in Florida, use your best judgement and ask around at your local dropzone.

Please use common sense as not all canopies will be listed. If the only canopy listed is "soft" more than likely the one size larger canopy will be the optimum fit for that container. Also, if there are two sizes listed as "optimal" then they are probably not quite too small but not quite completely filling out the tray and both would work fine. Do not take these as gospel but as a rough guide, please look at customer's in the field who have left feedback when making your determination. We at the factory can only recommend these sizes safely however you may find that customer's in the field have used other combinations just fine.

The factory only recommends getting two sizes of main and reserve for your container. We recommend only one downsize per container therefore, there will be an "optimum" fit and a "soft" fit with the "soft" fit being the downsized canopy recommended by Mirage Systems, Inc.

Factors to be considered in container sizing

  • Accessories - Our suggestions are based on the container having an AAD.
  • Combinations - Be aware that a 'tight' main and a 'tight' reserve combined together will make the rig 'a brick'. This is due to their being pressed up against each other where the main and reserve containers meet. An AAD will make things even tighter.
  • Line Type - The fits listed on the chart are based on the canopies having microline. Larger lines will have a noticeable effect on pack volume - especially in smaller containers.
  • Packer Skill - The fits listed are based on input from experienced packers. If you are an inexperienced packer we suggest you do not get a canopy with a 'tight' pack rating unless you plan on hiring packers.
  • Humidity - Humidity has a direct influence on pack volume. If you are in a very dry environment, your canopy will pack bigger. For this reason we do not suggest a 'tight' pack rating for desert areas unless you are a very experienced packer.
